18th March, 2014
I rise to congratulate the Women of West Heidelberg in my electorate.
On Friday 7th March I had the great pleasure of joining them and their many supporters to celebrate International Women’s Day 2014.
The Women of West Heidelberg was established nearly a decade ago and has celebrated and promoted the lives of local women every year.
The theme for this year’s celebrations was Inspiring Change - encouraging advocacy for women’s advancement everywhere and challenging the status quo for women’s equality.
In this great aim, the event was held under the slogan:
A woman’s place is in the Home…
And the Classroom;
And the Boardroom;
And the Newsroom;
Guests were inspired by Speakers Mary Crooks AO, Executive Director of the Victorian Women’s Trust, as well as Sister Frances Baum, former community worker and Director of Banyule Community Health.
Mary spoke about the origins of the Victorian Women’s Trust and the great work women do in their day to day lives.
I was honoured to join them to speak about the incredibly important role that women play in holding together our local communities.
I thank Betty Dodd, Maxine Matthews and Wendy Ogden for their ongoing leadership and dedication to the Women of West Heidelberg.
