Where are our local Black Spots?

25 August 2008

Now is the time for local residents to take advantage of next year’s 33 per cent increase in Black Spot funding, Jenny Macklin, Federal Member for Jagajaga, said today.

“Next year (2009-10) the Rudd Labor Government will honour its commitment to increase Black Spot funding, so let’s look at identifying local roads which are thought to be dangerous”, Ms Macklin said.

“I will be writing to local police stations as well as Banyule and Nillumbik Council to find out which roads they think are dangerous.

“In addition to this, I would also like local residents to think about dangerous spots on our roads and advise my office by ringing 9459 1411 before November 30 2008.

Roads which may be considered for Black Spot funding must have a proven history of crashes which have resulted in casualties or are areas that could be considered “accidents waiting to happen”.

“Once I have received this information from locals, I will then make a submission to the Minister for Infrastructure to apply for Black Spot funding for these areas.

Black Spot funding can include building roundabouts, improving dangerous intersections, installing speed warnings and traffic signals, and upgrading pedestrian crossings.

“There is no question this government is committed to reducing crashes on our roads.

“Accidents take a huge toll on families, our communities and the economy and it is important we work together to reduce our road toll as much as possible.
