URGENT ACTION NEEDED ON ABUSE OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITY IN INSTITUTIONAL CARE
March 31, 2017
Labor is deeply concerned by the violence inflicted on people with disability revealed on ABC’s Four Corners program last night.
It is totally unacceptable that incidents of sexual and physical abuse have occurred and that perpetrators may still be working in the disability sector.
The evidence of abuse of vulnerable people with disability should shame us all.
The voices of people who have been abused must be heard. Their voices can no longer be ignored.
Labor continues to call for an independent national inquiry into violence, abuse and neglect against people with disability.
Labor continues to listen to people with disability and their families about the best type of inquiry.
The Government must take immediate action to ensure issues raised in the Four Corners report are urgently investigated.
Labor will not allow this matter to be swept under the carpet.
We must protect vulnerable Australians.
We need a system that gives them justice and we must ensure we have appropriate safeguards in place.
