TWO YEARS ON ABBOTT’S PAID PARENTAL LEAVE BROKEN PROMISE HURTS FAMILIES

August 23, 2015

Two years ago today Tony Abbott promised:

“If you want to do the right thing by the families of Australia by the workers of Australia you need a fair dinkum paid parental leave policy and that’s exactly what people will get from the Coalition.”

ABBOTT – PRESS CONFERENCE, DARWIN – 23 AUGUST 2013

Two years later the Prime Minister is trying to cut paid parental leave to around 80,000 new mums every year.

This will be devastating for new mothers, who will be forced to spend less time with their newborn babies in those precious early months.

Because of Tony Abbott’s cuts to paid parental leave 45,000 new parents will lose part of their PPL and 34,000 new parents will lose the full $11,500.

No policy encapsulates the chaos and confusion at the heart of the Abbott Government more than paid parental leave.

First Tony Abbott said Australia would have a PPL scheme “over his dead body”.

Next Tony Abbott promised a $20 billion ‘signature’ scheme, claiming it was his Nixon goes to China moment.

Mr Abbott wanted to introduce an unfair and unsustainable paid parental leave scheme that would have seen wealthy women receive $75,000.

Then he dumped it.

Then on Mother’s Day this year the Abbott Government announced it would cut paid parental leave to 80,000 new parents every year.

Tony Abbott’s cuts to paid parental leave are the ultimate betrayal of Australian families.

Families know they can never trust a word from Tony Abbott ever again.

If Mr Abbott really wants to do the right thing by families he should scrap his unfair cuts to paid parental leave forever.
