TURNBULL’S LATEST BUDGET CUTS TO TARGET PENSIONERS
March 20, 2017
Reports today reveal that the Turnbull Government once again has pensioners in its sights ahead of the May Budget.
Pensioners could lose up to $49.10 a fortnight and their pensioner concession card under Malcolm Turnbull’s latest round of secret Budget cuts.
The last thing that pensioners and vulnerable Australians need is more unfair cuts from Malcolm Turnbull and the Liberals.
Under the proposal, the Turnbull Government would scrap all social security payments below $20.02 a fortnight – a cut that would affect age pensioners, disability support pensioners, carers and people on Newstart.
How on earth does Malcolm Turnbull think it’s fair to try and cut the pension and at the same time give big business a $50 billion handout?
In every single Budget the Liberals have handed down they’ve tried to cut the pension.
In the 2014 Budget they tried to cut pension indexation – a cut that would have meant pensioners would be forced to live on $80 a week less within ten years.
Then the Liberals did a deal with the Greens to cut the pension to around 330,000 Australian pensioners by changing the assets test.
The Liberals still want to increase the pension age to 70 – meaning Australia would have the oldest pension age in the developed world.
On top of all that the Liberals will this week try to force its plan to scrap the Energy Supplement to pensioners through the Senate.
Scrapping the Energy Supplement will mean a cut of $14.10 per fortnight to single pensioners or $365 a year. Couple pensioners will be $21.20 a fortnight worse off or around $550 a year worse off.
Malcolm Turnbull still hasn’t learned the lesson from the horror 2014 Budget. Australians don’t want to see cuts made to pensioners, people with disability, carers and people on Newstart.
The Liberal Party is the Party of pension cuts.
