TONY ABBOTT’S HYPOCRISY ON PAID PARENTAL LEAVE
May 14, 2015
Tony Abbott’s has demonstrated his complete ignorance of the pressures faced by Australian families again today, as he once again defended his cuts to Paid Parental Leave.
In Question Time today, Mr Abbott made clear he doesn’t think Australian Defence Force and Australian Federal Police personnel shouldn’t get to spend more precious time with their newborn babies.
He now wants these families to spend less time with their babies.
In a further sign of the Prime Minister’s utter hypocrisy, Tony Abbott said in 2010:
“26 weeks which everyone knows is the minimum that should be spent at home by mothers with newborns.”

Yesterday, the Prime Minister said about new mums who receive more than 18 weeks parental leave:
“It is not right, it should not happen and it will not happen under this government.”

If Tony Abbott gets his way, up to 80,000 women a year will be left worse off because of his cuts to Paid Parental Leave. Some new mums stand to lose as much as $11,500.
This includes nurses, midwives, defence personnel and police.
This new attack comes at the same time Tony Abbott wants to impose $5.5 billion worth of cuts to Family Tax Benefits – cuts which he refused to reverse in this year’s Budget.
This year’s Budget – like last year’s - will leave families in Australia worse off.
Australian families deserve better than Tony Abbott.
