Treasurer Scott Morrison’s speech today shows the Liberals still don’t get fairness.

Mr Morrison’s description of the ‘taxed and taxed nots’ is straight out of the Joe Hockey playbook of ‘leaners and lifters’.

Mr Morrison’s speech shows that the Turnbull Government is more interested in dividing Australians than showing economic leadership.

Scott Morrison and Malcolm Turnbull still want to ram the so called zombie measures from the reviled 2014 Budget through the Parliament. These include:

  • Increasing the pension age to 70 – the oldest pension age in the developed world;
  • Cuts to paid parental leave – that will affect 80,000 new parents every year;
  • Cuts to family payments;
  • The one month wait for Newstart.

Rather than using the new Parliament to chart a new course the Turnbull Government is doubling down on the same unfair cuts from the 2014 and 2015 Budgets.

The Australian people have rejected these unfair cuts time and time again.

By keeping all of these unfair cuts, Scott Morrison is proving that he is no better than Joe Hockey, and Mr Turnbull is showing he’s no better than Tony Abbott.

Just like Joe Hockey, Scott Morrison is long on lecturing the Australian people and short on solutions.

Mr Morrison needs to take responsibility that the deficit has tripled under this Government’s watch since the 2014 Budget.

Rather than lecturing the Australian people on the need for harsh cuts Mr Morrison should look at Labor’s sensible and fair budget repair measures, such as our reforms to negative gearing and capital gains tax concessions.
