RESTRICTED CHILD CARE ACTIVITY TEST WOULD HURT FAMILIES AND CHILDREN

The Government needs to come clean on who will be impacted by their child care proposals, with reports today that 100,000 families could be locked out of the system entirely as a result of a harsher activity test.

Restrictions on the current activity test would make it harder for families to return to work, and leave working parents – particularly those working part time – with less support. They could also cut access to early education for some of the most disadvantaged and vulnerable children, who have the most to gain.

Labor has requested detailed modelling about who will be worse off under proposals by the Government, because we do not want to see families pushed out of the system by ill-considered changes.

Unfortunately, the Government is yet to provide this information - and Australian families are still in the dark about exactly what is being proposed and who will be worse off.

The Government either has information and doesn't want to provide it, or doesn't have this information at all. Three weeks out from the Budget, both are scary prospects.

Labor wants to work with the Government; but time is fast running out for meaningful discussions to take place before the Budget.
