The Department of Social Services has contradicted claims by Christian Porter that all families on Family Tax Benefits will get a $10 per fortnight increase when their end-of-year supplements are cut.
On Wednesday 21 October 2015 in Parliament, Christian Porter said:
“All FTB A families will receive $10 more a fortnight. That is, 1.5 million Australian families will receive $10 more a fortnight.”
[CHRISTIAN PORTER – QUESTION TIME – 21 OCTOBER 2015]
But in Senate Estimates today, his own Department said this is wrong:
“1.2 million families who receive more than the base rate will be…will get the $10”
[DSS OFFICIAL – SENATE ESTIMATES – 11 FEBRUARY 2016
300,000 families get nothing.
Christian Porter either can’t add up or he’s misleading Australian families about the real extent of his cuts to family payments.
If he gets his way, 1.5 million families will lose their end-of-year supplements. That’s a cut of $726 per child.
Even if they get a $10 per fortnight increase, that’s a cut of $466 per child, per year.
Now it is clear many families will lose the full $726.
These cuts will affect 3 million children. They will hurt low and middle income families, including single parents and grandparent carers the hardest.
Christian Porter should stop misleading Australian families and drop these cuts forever.
Only Labor will stand up for families, because only Labor will put people first.
