PORTER CAN’T HIDE FROM HIS CUTS TO YOUNG PEOPLE
December 07, 2016
The Minister for Social Services, Christian Porter can’t hide from his harsh cuts to young people, including the Five Week Wait for Newstart and Cuts to Youth Allowance.
Mr Porter is pretending that an automatic indexation of youth payments is some act of generosity by the Turnbull Government.
But young Australians know that Mr Porter really wants to take the knife to support for young people.
Mr Porter wants to make young jobseekers under the age of 25 wait five weeks before being able to access any income support.
If Mr Porter gets his way young jobseekers under 25 will be pushed into hardship with nothing to live on for five weeks.
The cut to Newstart for young jobseekers was due to start on 1 January 2017, but thanks to Labor’s principled opposition, young Australians have been protected from the Turnbull Government’s harsh cuts.
The Turnbull Government also wants to change the eligibility age for Newstart, pushing jobseekers between the ages of 22 and 24 onto the lower Youth Allowance – a cut of around $48 a week or around $2,500 a year.
The Turnbull Government simply can’t be trusted to do the right thing by young jobseekers.
Labor will continue to stand up for young people by opposing the Turnbull Government’s unfair cuts to Newstart and Youth Allowance.
