Shadow Minister for Families and Payments, Jenny Macklin MP and Labor Senator Carol Brown today met with Pensioners at JJ’s Bakery in Longford to discuss Tony Abbott’s savage cuts to Tasmanian pensioners.

“Tony Abbott’s budget of broken promises and cruel cuts is a savage attack on the retirement security of pensioners in Tasmania,” said Ms Macklin.

“If Tony Abbott’s pension cuts had been in place for the last four years, today Tasmanian pensioners would be at least $1,500 a year worse off.

“Add to that the impact of Tony Abbott’s new GP Tax, the increased tax on petrol and the cuts to concessions for vital services such as public transport, electricity and water bills and it’s very clear that pensioners will be hit hard by this unfair Budget,” Ms Macklin said.

Senator Carol Brown said Tasmanian pensioners had been lied to by Tony Abbott.

“Tony Abbott told Tasmanians that there would be no cuts to pensions,” she said.

“Now nearly 100,000 Tasmanians are going to have their pensions cut.

This is a complete betrayal of Tasmanian pensioners,” Senator Brown said.
