NEW DATA SHOWS LOW INCOME PARENTS WILL BE HIT BY ABBOTT’S PPL CUTS

August 25, 2015

Thousands of new parents working in retail, cleaning, and hospitality will be hit hard by Tony Abbott’s cuts to paid parental leave according to new data released to the Senate.

The Abbott Government's own figures show some new mums earning less than $30,000 a year will lose $11,800 in paid parental leave.

Data released by the Department of Social Services show new parents earning as little as $10,000 a year will be hit by Mr Abbott’s cuts.

This completely blows apart the argument made by Tony Abbott and Scott Morrison that only wealthy public servants would be hit by these cuts to paid parental leave.

The truth is that some new parents earning around $30,000 will be more than $11,000 worse off.

This will be devastating for these new parents, who will be forced to spend less time with their newborn babies in those precious early months.

These new parents aren’t rorting the system as claimed by Scott Morrison they just want to spend more time with their newborn babies before returning to work.

The new data comes as the Police Federation Association warn that domestic violence, child abuse and sexual assault victims will be worse off if Tony Abbott and Scott Morrison get their way and cut paid parental leave.

The PFA’s submission to the Senate Inquiry examining cuts to paid parental leave has also slammed the cuts as ‘short-sighted’ saying it would hurt babies.

Scott Morrison should stop lying to justify his cruel cuts.

And he should leave Paid Parental Leave alone.
