NATS AND LIBS AT WAR OVER CUTS TO FAMILY PAYMENTS

April 07, 2015

Reports today confirm deep divisions in the Abbott Government over its $5.5 billion in cuts to family payments.

This just goes to show the level of chaos and division at the heart of the Abbott Government.

This Government’s dishonesty and incompetence is hurting Australians – we now have the Nationals calling on their own Government to drop its unfair cuts to families.

According to the Financial Review, Nationals Senators Matt Canavan, Bridget McKenzie, Barry O'Sullivan and John Williams have demanded that the government reverse cuts made to Family Tax Benefit Part B in last year’s budget.

But Nationals MPs have already voted for these cuts in the Parliament last year.

If they’d got their way some single parent families would be as much as $6,000 a year worse off.

These are the exact families the Nationals claim to support, yet they have done nothing to stop Tony Abbott from slashing their family tax benefits.

Labor has been calling on the government to drop its cuts to families – including single income families – for nearly a year.

Labor will continue to oppose these cuts in the Senate until they are dumped forever.

If Scott Morrison is serious about delivering for Australian families in this year’s budget, he needs to drop these cuts immediately.
