National Science week grants now open

2 October 2008

Funding is now available for individuals or groups to help run an event during National Science Week 2009, which runs from 15 – 23 August 2009.

Jenny Macklin MP, Federal Member for Jagajaga, encouraged community members to apply for funding of $3,000 to $40,000 to stage a local event as part of National Science Week in 2009.

"You don’t have to be a scientist to run a National Science Week event, and I encourage local groups and individuals to apply for this grant to help bring science to life" Ms Macklin said.

National Science Week offers a unique opportunity for Australians of all ages to get excited about science. In the past, events have ranged from local science festivals, music and comedy shows, interactive hands-on displays and online activities.

“Let’s think outside the square to find new ways to show how science is present in almost everything we do – from explaining how your phone works to why cats almost always land on their feet.”

“Science is amazing – and can be a lot of fun – so I encourage local community members with an interest in science to contribute to the 2009 festival by applying for a National Science Week grant to run an event.”

“Science can excite our imagination and open our minds, as one million Australians found when they attended one of the 800 events held across Australia during this year’s Science Week.

“If Australia is to continue lead the world in innovation, we must excite scientific imaginations, especially amongst our little ones, by celebrating the fascinating world of science.”

Ms Macklin said that it is important for the whole country to acknowledge our scientific achievements as well as encouraging future growth in science.
