MORRISON OUT OF TOUCH ON PAID PARENTAL LEAVE

August 18, 2015

Having previously described the current Paid Parental Leave Scheme as a ‘rort’, Scott Morrison has once again shown how out of touch he is with the community on Paid Parental Leave, this time describing his cuts as a ‘first world problem’.

Scott Morrison just does not understand how important Paid Parental Leave is for hard-working Australian families.

Paid Parental Leave helps new mums take extra time with their babies whilst at the same time staying connected to the workforce.

Everyone seems to understand this except Scott Morrison.

Submissions to the Senate Inquiry show just how widespread opposition to the proposed cuts.

Organisations like the YWCA, Save the Children and the National Foundation or Australian Women have all slammed the cuts.

And the business community has today made it clear they will do whatever they can to get around the changes and continue to provide support to new mums.

Quoted in reports this morning, ACCI chief executive Kate Carnell said:

"Why wouldn't employers immediately change the (parental leave) scheme they have in place and provide some other benefit?" she said.

"What an employer is doing is providing a benefit to encourage the best women to work for them and to stay in the workforce after having a baby, and to do the right thing by their staff member they will have to find another benefit that will suit that particular staff member," she said.

KATE CARNELL – HERALD SUN – 18 AUGUST 2015

Scott Morrison is completely out of step with business and families in his pursuit of these cuts.

If this legislation is passed, 45,000 new mums will lose part of their government-funded paid parental leave and 34,000 new parents will lose access to the national scheme entirely.

Labor will continue to fight these cuts. Scott Morrison should take them out of the parliament and out of the budget.
