MORRISON MUST SHOW THE IMPACT OF CUTS ON PENSIONERS
April 22, 2015
Scott Morrison must come clean about the true impact of the Abbott Government’s shameful cuts to pensioners.
Reports in today’s Fairfax papers reveal that the Abbott Government is blocking the release of documents that show what they know about how proposed changes to pensions would affect around 300,000 military veterans and their spouses.
These cuts to pension indexation also apply to Age Pensioners, Disability Support Pensioners and Carer Payment recipients.
Scott Morrison knows that his cuts to pension indexation will hurt Age Pensioners, DSP recipients and Carer Payment recipients.
But he doesn’t have the guts to show exactly how much worse off they will be as a result of his changes to pension indexation.
According to the Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS) the cuts currently before the Parliament will leave pensioners $80 a week worse off over the next decade.
The independent Parliamentary Budget Office (PBO) projects the change to the indexation of the pension will result in a $23 billion cut to the Age Pension by 2024-25.
Mr Morrison should reveal how much worse off he expects pensioners to be.
Labor continues to call on Tony Abbott to unreservedly drop his cuts to pension indexation – he must take his cuts out of the Parliament and out of the Budget.
Tony Abbott should also rule out making further changes to the Age Pension in next month’s budget.
