MORE WEASEL WORDS ON PENSIONS

April 16, 2014

Senior Government Cabinet Minister Christopher Pyne has again refused to rule out cuts to the Age Pension.

Speaking on Radio today, Mr Pyne was asked a simple question:

HOST: Christopher Pyne, can you absolutely rule out changes to the pension? And, also a question via text in reference to including the family home as an asset when it comes to calculating the pension? Can you rule that out?

PYNE: Well, it’s not our job to rule anything in or rule anything out, Spence.

But just today, the Prime Minister ruled in $1.2 billion worth of funding for roads in this May’s budget.

And in February, Prime Minister Tony Abbott ruled out changes to his rolled gold Paid Parental Leave Scheme:

CHRIS BOWEN: Given the revelation that the Commission of Audit has called on the government to dump its excessive, gold-plated Paid Parental Leave scheme, will the Prime Minister now abandon his signature policy?

Mr ABBOTT Well, no, I will not.

[QUESTION TIME – 27 FEBRUARY 2014]

The Prime Minister should immediately give Australian pensioners the same certainty and rule out any cuts or changes to the Age Pension.

Unless the Prime Minister and Treasurer Joe Hockey decisively rule out any change to the Age Pension, Labor – together with pensioners across Australia – will make sure the Prime Minister pays for his broken promise.
