Malcolm Turnbull has taken the knife to pensioners’ income once again, this time by abolishing the Energy Supplement for new recipients, despite promising before the last election that they would keep it.
The Liberals promised:
‘The carbon tax will go but the carbon tax compensation will stay so that every Australian should be better off.’
Tony Abbott, House of Reps, 23 June 2014
Now Malcolm Turnbull is taking the knife to the Energy Supplement.
This means that pensioners will be hundreds of dollars a year worse off:
- Single pensioners will be $366 a year worse off;
- Couple pensioners will be $550 a year worse off.
The Liberals’ relentless attack on pensioners continues.
Already, more than 330,000 pensioners will have their pension cut because of the deal between the Liberals and the Greens last year.
A further 190,000 pensioners will have their pension cut because of proposed changes to the amount of time pensioners can stay overseas before having their pension reduced.
These cuts come on top of Malcolm Turnbull’s plans to make future pensioners work until they are 70 – the oldest retirement age in the developed world.
For three years, Australian pensioners have been subjected to cut after cut after cut.
The only question for pensioners this election is: what next?
Will Malcolm Turnbull try to cut the indexation of the pension once again – just like he did in 2014?
Malcolm Turnbull and the Liberals will give tax cuts to millionaires and multinationals, while increasing the cost of living for ordinary Australians.
Only Labor can be trusted to stand up for pensioners because only Labor will put people first.
