During my time in Federal Parliament I have been proud of the many achievements we as a community have accomplished.
These include the rebuilding of the Austin Hospital and the construction of the Mercy Hospital. With the additions of the Olivia Newton John Cancer and Wellness Centre and the Melbourne Brain Centre, the Heidelberg Hospital Precinct has grown to become the largest medical precinct in the Southern Hemisphere.
Local families have always placed great importance on giving their children a quality education. Over recent years I am proud that 40 local schools have benefited with the construction of new school buildings as part of the Federal Labor Government’s efforts to improve education.
I am also proud of our achievements in working to maintain a better work life balance for local families. We all know the demands of the modern workforce can place strain on families. The implementation of Australia’s first parental leave scheme has benefited thousands of local residents who can now care for their newborns with 18 weeks of paid leave.
For people with disability and their carers we have made great strides with the introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme. As the Minister for Disability Reform during the Scheme’s introduction I was pleased to be able to work alongside so many disability advocates in Jagajaga. The NDIS will make a profound difference to the lives of people with disability and their carers.
Importantly, I have worked hard for older residents, many of whom undertake valuable voluntary work which benefits our community. During my time as Minister I was responsible for largest ever increase to the Age Pension in its history. Significantly the indexation of the pension was also enhanced at this time by strengthening the link to wages. This has helped the pension keep up with the cost of living.
As your local member I'm also committed to maintaining an active dialogue with residents. I regularly hold street stalls and in the coming months I am plan to hold a number of community events including a Seniors Morning Tea and the annual Baby Fun Day.
I look forward to continuing to work with and represent the local community.
