LIBERAL MPS BELL THE CAT ON TURNBULL’S ‘POLITICAL’ OPPOSITION TO NEGATIVE GEARING REFORM
January 30, 2017
Reports in today’s The Australian reveal that Liberal MPs John Alexander and Andrew Hastie are speaking out against Malcolm Turnbull’s refusal to do anything about negative gearing and housing affordability.
Mr Alexander and Mr Hastie join a chorus of NSW State Liberals who have pleaded with their Federal counterparts to consider winding back unfair and distortionary tax concessions.
John Alexander’s repeated calls for negative gearing to be addressed are especially embarrassing for Mr Turnbull given that he chaired the Turnbull Government’s own inquiry into housing affordability.
The repeated calls by Liberal Party MPs for reform of negative gearing make it clear that Malcolm Turnbull’s weak opposition is based purely on politics not on policy.
Malcolm Turnbull and Scott Morrison now say that housing affordability is a priority but the only policy they have is to get rich parents or leave town.
They continue to rule out reforms to negative gearing that would level the playing field between first home buyers and investors but the fact is, a housing affordability policy without reforms to negative gearing is no plan, it’s an housing affordability sham.
Scott Morrison is visiting London to find out what he can do about housing affordability in Australia, while his own backbench are telling him the answer is to address negative gearing.
It’s time for Mr Turnbull and Mr Morrison to listen and act by reforming negative gearing.
