LABOR WELCOMES SENATE INQUIRY INTO ABUSE OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITY
February 11, 2015
Federal Labor welcomes the Senate’s decision to launch an inquiry into violence, abuse and neglect against people with disability.
This is an issue that has been neglected for too long.
We cannot allow that neglect to continue.
A Senate inquiry is an important step in the pathway to healing for people with disability who have suffered abuse.
But the path will be long.
In November last year, Labor supported calls by former Disability Discrimination Commissioner Graeme Innes AM and others for an independent national investigation into abuse.
Today, we renew our calls for such an inquiry.
Allegations of abuse of people with disability should be investigated fully, perpetrators brought to justice, and proper supports provided to victims.
We must also ensure that proper safeguards are in place to ensure that people with disability - wherever they may reside – are safe and supported and free from fear.
Labor believes a national inquiry will help to ensure that people with disability have the same rights and protections that every other Australian enjoys.
