LABOR, PENSIONERS, FAMILIES AND YOUNG JOBSEEKERS FORCE ABBOTT INTO HUMILIATING BUDGET BACKDOWN

Today’s report that the Abbott Government will scrap its harshest cuts to pensioners, families and young jobseekers from legislation currently before the Senate is proof that the Government has completely lost control of its Budget.

For four months, Labor, together with pensioners, families and young jobseekers have fought against Tony Abbott’s lies, deceit and broken promises.

And today, people power has won out.

This is a hugely humiliating back down from Tony Abbott and Joe Hockey, after they rammed these cuts through the House of Representatives in June.

But make no mistake – Tony Abbott and Joe Hockey have already shown their hand. Australians know what’s on their wish-list of cuts.

Today’s report also confirms the Abbott Government will leave the door open to introduce these cuts into the Parliament again when they get the chance.

Australians won’t be fooled. Tony Abbott needs to scrap these cuts for good.

Just over one year ago Tony Abbott was elected to government based on a lie. And for just over one year, Tony Abbott has had people on the Age Pension, the Disability Support Pension, the Carer Payment, Newstart, and ordinary families firmly in his sights -

  • A $23 billion cut to the Age Pension that will see pensioners around $80 a week worse off within a decade.
  • Forcing young jobseekers to go without any support at all for six months.
  • And $7.5 billion slashed from family budgets, leaving a single income family on $65,000 as much as $6,000 a year worse off.

Labor will continue to stand with pensioners, families and young jobseekers to fight Tony Abbott and Joe Hockey’s attack on ordinary Australians every day until the next election.
