LABOR CALLS ON SENATE TO PROTECT SCHOOLKIDS BONUS

July 07, 2014

In this fortnight, 1.3 million Australian families are receiving much needed assistance with the costs of sending their children to school, thanks to Labor’s Schoolkids Bonus.

Labor calls on Senators to oppose Tony Abbott’s moves to abolish the Schoolkids Bonus.

Labor welcomes Mr Palmer’s commitment today that the Palmer United Party will vote to protect the SchoolKids Bonus, and we strongly encourage other Senators to do the same.

The Abbott Government will vote to axe the SchoolKids Bonus in the Senate later this week, leaving Australian families $410 a year worse off for every primary school child and $820 a year worse off for every secondary school child.

In a cynical attempt to try and fool Australian families, the Government has linked the repeal of the Schoolkids Bonus to the repeal of the Mining Tax.

The Schoolkids Bonus was never paid for by the Mining Tax. This is just another attempt to con Australian families.

Axing the Schoolkids Bonus means a typical Australian family with two kids in school would be $15,000 worse off over the course of their children’s schooling.

This is a massive blow for families, who will also be hit by Tony Abbott’s cuts to Family Tax Benefits, a new GP tax and an increased fuel tax.

The SchoolKids Bonus is designed to help families pay for things like school uniforms, shoes, books and stationery, as well as other costs like school excursions, music lessons and sports registration fees.

Labor will continue to stand up for Australian families who have come under sustained attack from the Abbott Government’s cruel and callous Budget.
