Kevin Andrews’ lies about Australia’s welfare system have been exposed once again, this time by the National Welfare Rights Network.

All year, Kevin Andrews has been peddling lies and falsehoods about Australia’s welfare spending.

In January, Kevin Andrews claimed that Australia’s welfare spending was ‘unsustainable’ and Australia was at risk of becoming a welfare state like ‘nations in Europe’.

But contrary to Kevin Andrews’ statement, welfare spending in Australia is well below other countries in the OECD.

Welfare expenditure in Australia accounted for just 8.6 per cent of GDP in 2013, compared to the OECD average of 13 per cent.

According to National Welfare Rights Network President Maree O’Halloran, the proportion of working age people on income support has fallen by a third over the previous 17 years, from 25 per cent in 1997 to around 17 per cent in 2013.

In fact, in Government Labor oversaw significant changes to the DSP which a reduction in the number of people being granted the DSP.

People with disability and other recipients of income support do not deserve to be the targets of this Government’s cruelty.

This Budget has already slashed support for people on income support.

Kevin Andrews must not use his McClure Review as a basis for a further round of savage cuts.

And he should stop misleading Australians about Australia’s welfare system in order to justify his cruel attack on low income Australians.

2014 has been a year of lies, broken promises and chaos. Tony Abbott is not the Prime Minister he said he would be.
