KEVIN ANDREWS DISHONESTLY CLAIMS CREDIT FOR PENSION INCREASE

March 03, 2014

Kevin Andrews has dishonestly claimed credit for delivering an increase to the Pension.

Today, the Minister has claimed that “the Coalition Government is pleased to deliver increases to those on the Age Pension, Disability Support Pension, Carer Payment and veterans’ income support.”  The truth is, the Pension is indexed twice each year – once in March and again in September.

Kevin Andrews made no decision to increase the Pension – current indexation arrangements were legislated by Labor, when we delivered the biggest increase to the Age Pension in a century.

While the last Coalition government ignored pensioners for more than 11 years, Labor delivered the single biggest Pension increase in more than a century, and reformed the system so the Pension now keeps pace with the cost of living.

If Mr Andrews wants to do something positive for Australian pensioners, he can start by ruling out any cuts the Pension – something the Prime Minister refused to do in Parliament last week.

This government is engaged in a campaign to prepare the community for a round of savage cuts to vulnerable Australians, including people on Newstart, the Age Pension and the Disability Support Pension – all so Tony Abbott can pay $75,000 to wealthy women to have a baby.

The priorities of this Government are completely twisted.
