JUST FIVE DAYS LEFT TO KILL THE ZOMBIES
May 02, 2018
With just five days until his make-or-break Budget, Malcolm Turnbull is running out of time to drop his unfair cuts to pensioners and vulnerable Australians once and for all.
Some of these unfair cuts have been undead for four years - since Tony Abbott's horror 2014 Budget.
These cruel cuts have been rejected by the Parliament. Keeping them in the budget is nothing more than a fiscal fairy tale. They include:
- Increasing the pension age to 70 - meaning Australia will have an older pension age than the US, UK, Canada and New Zealand;
- Axing the Energy Supplement to two million Australians – including 400,000 age pensioners and vulnerable Australians on Newstart;
- Taking away the pension supplement from pensioners who go overseas for more than six weeks; and
- Making migrants wait up to 15 years before they can access the age pension.
Labor has been fighting these unfair cuts for years.
With no prospect they will pass the Parliament, Turnbull can't credibly keep them on the books.
This is a test for Mr Turnbull. Will he do the right thing and drop his unfair zombie cuts? Or will he build another budget on sand?
Will he hand down a Budget that contains no cuts to pensioners? Or will he make it a fifth Budget in a row that the Liberals try to cut the pension?
