Jenny Macklin wishes oldest Australian a happy birthday

13 October 2008

Jenny Macklin MP, Member for Jagajaga, today congratulated local Viewbank resident Emily Beatrice “Bea” Riley on reaching the remarkable milestone of her 112th birthday.

Mrs Riley is the oldest recorded person in Australia, and the 30th oldest person in the World.  She was born on October 13, 1896 in the Gippsland dairy town of Poowong.

“I would like to warmly congratulate Mrs Riley on this amazing achievement” Ms Macklin said.

“Bea has witnessed some amazing events during her life, such as Australia’s federation, man landing on the moon, and Phar Lap’s victories.

“She also survived two World Wars and the Great Depression.”

“It’s difficult to imagine the incredible changes that Mrs Riley has witnessed throughout her life, having seen the introduction of televisions, decimal currency and computers.

“Her knowledge of our country and our history must be immense.

“More Australians are living longer, and it’s wonderful to have these living memories right in our community.

“Our older people need to be respected and cherished for the work they have done, the people they have helped and the contribution they have made to our country” Ms Macklin said.

Ms Macklin has written to Mrs Riley to congratulate her on this remarkable achievement, as have Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Aged Care Minister Justine Elliot.
