Jenny Macklin visits Mission Australia’s job creation project
3 October 2008
Jenny Macklin MP, Member for Jagajaga, today visited Mission Australia’s Urban Renewal Enterprise Employment Program (UREEP) in West Heidelberg.
The West Heidelberg UREEP program is operating in Boyd Crescent, West Heidelberg, with small crews of landscape gardeners beautifying 20 front yards by building and painting fences and improving the playground and community nature strips.
“This work will have a very positive impact on West Heidelberg. People are taking pride in their improved surroundings and those who are working on the project are looking ahead to apprenticeships and jobs in carpentry and landscaping” Ms Macklin said.
“This project is a wonderful example of our community working together to provide skills and support for people who’ve been long term unemployed,” Ms Macklin said.
“Many people supported by this program come from families where unemployment has become a way of life.
“By giving people work experience, positive social supports and qualifications we provide them with a chance to create a better life and to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty.”
