HUMAN RIGHTS COMMITTEE QUESTIONS MORRISON’S CUTS TO PAID PARENTAL LEAVE

August 14, 2015

The Joint Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights – chaired by a Liberal MP - has called on Scott Morrison to justify his savage cutsto Paid Parental Leave.

Even the Liberals are now questioning Scott Morrison’s cuts to families.

It is time he dropped these cuts and stopped his attack on Australian families.

In a report handed down this week, the Human Rights Committee said that the cuts, which will see up to 80,000 new mums lose as much as $11,500:

  •  Limit the right to social security, enshrined in Article 9 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights
  •  Limit rights at work and the right to maternity leave enshrined in Article 11 of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women

  •  Limit the right to equality and non-discrimination enshrined in Articles 2, 16 and 26 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights

This is another blow to Scott Morrison as he struggles to push his cruel measures through the Parliament.

Not only is Scott Morrison ripping as much as $11,500 from 80,000 new mums through his cuts to Paid Parental Leave, he is still proceeding with his savage cuts to Family Tax Benefits.

These cuts mean single parents and single income families will lose more than $3,000 a year when their youngest child turns six.

Some ordinary Australian families will lose as much as $6,000 a year.

Scott Morrison just doesn’t get it. Australian families are doing it tough. They don’t deserve to have their lives made tougher by this cruel government.

Labor will continue to fight Scott Morrison’s attack on Australian families.
