Joe Hockey yesterday released draft legislation to repeal the Schoolkids Bonus, legislation that will leave more than 1.2 million Australian families worse off when it comes to meeting the education expenses of their children.

“Not only is Joe Hockey ripping off Australian families, he is trying to fool Australian families about his reasons for doing so” says Shadow Minister for Families and Payments Jenny Macklin.

“Hockey is claiming the Schoolkids Bonus was paid for by the Minerals Resource Rent Tax (MRRT)”.

“It wasn’t”.

“The Schoolkids Bonus replaced the Education Tax Refund. It has nothing to do with the MRRT package and Joe Hockey knows it”.

“Joe Hockey is trying to fool Australian families by repealing the Schoolkids Bonus as part of the repeal of the MRRT”.

“This will be a big hit to working families”

By June of this year, more than 1.25 million Australian families had received the Schoolkids Bonus, which pays $410 for each child in primary school and $820 for each child in secondary school.

“This has meant much needed relief for low and middle income families struggling to meet the costs of their children’s education”

“Every one of these families will be worse off when the Schoolkids Bonus is repealed. Scrapping the Schoolkids Bonus means the average Australian family with two kids will be $1,230 worse off every year and $15,000 worse off over the life of their child’s education”.

“Australian families deserve to know why Joe Hockey is making life harder for Australian families”.

If this legislation is not successful, the next payment will be due in January 2014.
