HAND ON HEART PORTER WILL DRIVE YOUNG PEOPLE INTO POVERTY

September 21, 2015

New Social Services Minister Christian Porter has put his hand on his heart and committed to driving young jobseekers into poverty.

Asked about his position on the cruel cuts to young jobseekers on ABC AM this morning, Christian Porter said,

“But absolutely you have to pursue those types of savings, particularly if they're fair minded, and I hand on heart absolutely think that they are.”

CHRISTIAN PORTER, ABC RADIO, 21 SEPTEMBER 2015

Christian Porter is already showing he doesn’t get it.

Australians don’t want to live in a country that deliberately pushes young people into poverty.

For nearly 18 months, Labor has fought this cruel cut because only Labor believes that you don’t help young people by punishing them.

First the Abbott-Turnbull Government tried to cut income support for jobseekers under 30 for six months.

Labor, young people and the Senate said no.

Then the Abbott-Turnbull Government tried to leave jobseekers under 25 with nothing to live on for a month.

Labor, young people and the Senate said no.

They even tried to cut income support to young people between the ages of 22 and 24 by around $46 a week by pushing them onto the lower youth allowance.

Malcolm Turnbull needs to step up and immediately drop the Liberal Party’s unfair cuts to young jobseekers.

If Malcolm Turnbull is serious about showing a new style of leadership he would make Christian Porter drop the unfair cuts to young jobseekers immediately.

Today’s comments from Christian Porter prove that nothing will change under Malcolm Turnbull’s leadership.
