GOVERNMENT STILL REFUSES TO REVEAL HOW MANY FAMILIES WILL LOSE UNDER CHILD CARE CHANGES

June 06, 2015

Senate Estimates yesterday, the Government again refused to reveal how many families will have their access to child care reduced, and how many will be pushed out of the child care system altogether.

SENATOR SUE LINES: How many people will be worse off as a result of the Government’s child care changes? And how many will be out of the child care system altogether?

DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES (DSS) OFFICIAL: In relation to the activity test?

SENATOR LINES: Yep

DSS OFFICIAL: Senator, I’m just trying to unpack, um, what you have just asked. Um, ‘cause there are a number of, um, a number of things in the question. So, I don’t have a figure for you for about activity – like, how many people. So are you asking because of the 24 hours is now changing to being three steps.

SENATOR LINES: Yep

DSS OFFICIAL: Who are the people that won’t meet those steps?

SENATOR LINES: Yep

DSS OFFICIAL: I guess, um, we don’t have the specific number with us on that. Um, what we can, um…

LINES: But you have got a number?

DSS OFFICIAL: Um, yes. I think we do. We’d have to take that one on notice.

Labor has been asking for this information for months.

We have written to the Government on at least half a dozen occasions requesting information about the impact of their child care changes on Australian families.

But Tony Abbott and Scott Morrison refuse to say how many families will be worse off.

Either the Government doesn’t know how many families will have their access to child care cut, or they are keeping it a secret.
