Government data reported in the media today confirms that Tony Abbott’s unaffordable Paid Parental Leave Scheme is grossly unfair.

At the same time Tony Abbott unleashes an all-out attack on low and middle income families, pensioners and young people, he wants to press ahead with his plans to pay thousands of high income women $50,000 to have a baby.

Government data reported today shows that more than 12,000 women earning more than $90,000 per annum will receive $45,000-50,000 to have six months off to have a baby.

Of course, the real number will be much higher, as even millionaires will be eligible to receive $50,000 under Tony Abbott’s unfair scheme.

In contrast, Labor’s fair and affordable Paid Parental Leave Scheme has proved to be well targeted to low and middle income women.

This revelation follows Tony Abbott’s cruel and callous Budget that will see:

  • More than 700,000 low and middle income families lose their Family Tax Benefit Part B over the next three years when their youngest child turns 6;
  • Cuts to pensions that will see pensioners lose $80 a week within a decade, according to analysis by the Australian Council of Social Services (ACOSS);
  • An estimated 500,000 young people plunged into poverty because of cuts to Newstart and Youth Allowance.

The fact that Tony Abbott wants to make it harder for low and middle income Australians while giving thousands of dollars to millionaires shows how twisted his priorities are.

Labor has long been calling for Tony Abbott to dump his unfair and unaffordable Paid Parental Leave Scheme.

So have business leaders, Joe Hockey’s Commission of Audit, former Treasurer Peter Costello and a plethora of Tony Abbott’s Liberal and National Party colleagues.

Tony Abbott is all alone when it comes to support for his grossly unfair policy.

He should face up to reality and scrap it immediately.
