Five Stimulus projects open across Banyule

26 February 2010

The Banyule City Council community today celebrated the opening of the new Malahang Reserve BMX and Skate Park facility and a further four community infrastructure projects.

Jenny was on hand to mark the opening of the projects with Victoria’s State Housing Minister Richard Wynne and Mayor Wayne Phillips.

Minister for Infrastructure and Local Government, Anthony Albanese, said the Rudd Labor Government provided $440,000 to the Banyule City Council for the five projects - including $90,000 for the Skate Park - from the $1 billion Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program.

“The Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program is a key part of the Rudd Government’s Economic Stimulus Plan, delivering local jobs in communities across Australia by building infrastructure for the long term,” Mr Albanese said.

Mrs Macklin said that importantly, around 50 jobs were supported during construction of these projects and more employment opportunities are expected to be created on an ongoing basis.

“Amongst other things, the new skate and BMX facility will provide a meeting place where the many young people in the community can interact and exercise,” she said.

“The four further completed projects include the Community Gateways Enhancement throughout Heidelberg West and Greensborough, new shade structures at Willinda Park, the Macleod Hall Upgrade and the new Petrie Park Playground.

“These projects will provide lasting benefits to the whole community.”

In partnership with every council in the country, the Rudd Labor Government is delivering more than 3,300 small and larger scale building projects like these, including new and refurbished public libraries, sporting facilities, parks and playgrounds, and child care centres.

“In fact, we’re making the single largest federal investment in community infrastructure through the Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program. The Program’s remaining $220 million will be made available to councils in coming months, with the Banyule City Council set to receive at least another $227,000,” Mr Albanese said.

“This additional funding will support even more local jobs and rebuild even more of the nation’s vital community infrastructure.”

Minister Albanese and Minister Macklin congratulated the Banyule City Council and the local community for helping deliver these five projects and helping to build a stronger region for the future.
