EIGHT PER CENT DROP IN AUSTRALIANS ON SOCIAL SECURITY

October 20, 2016

The Department of Social Services today revealed that the number of working age Australians in the social security system has fallen eight per cent since 1996.

“Since 1996, there’s been a decrease in the percentage of the working age population, aged 16 to 64 receiving income support from 24.7% at 1996 to 16.6%.”

Department of Social Services, Senate Estimates, 20 October 2016

The Turnbull Government’s scare campaign about the blowout in the number of Australians receiving social security payments has now been shown to be just that – a scare campaign.

The truth is the Turnbull Government is trying to scare Australians into accepting harsh cuts to vulnerable Australians.

The Liberals are hell-bent on ripping money from the pockets of low and middle income Australians so they can give a massive company tax cut to big business and the banks.
