COTA SAYS AGE PENSION IS SUSTAINABLE
April 24, 2015
The scare campaign that Scott Morrison and Joe Hockey are running against the sustainability of the pension is completely false.
The Council on the Ageing (COTA) believes that Australia’s Age Pension is sustainable, stating in its Position Paper that:
“On its own the age pension system is sustainable, as indeed Treasury said it was in the 2009 Federal Budget when the pension was last reviewed and the single pension increased.”
COTA, POSITION STATEMENT, p. 2
Scott Morrison should stop scaring pensioners.
Australia spends a relatively small proportion of our GDP on the Age Pension compared with other developed countries.
Scott Morrison appears hell-bent on making pensioners pay for Tony Abbott’s broken promises.
COTA has also renewed pressure on the Abbott Government to reverse its $1.3 billion in cuts to concessions for pensioners and seniors made in last year’s budget, warning that:
“Older people face an immediate reduction in their quality of life through higher costs for essential services.”
COTA, POSITION STATEMENT, p. 8
Labor calls on the Abbott Government to reverse its unfair cuts to concessions for pensioners and seniors for essential services like water and electricity bills as well as council rates.
The Liberal Party is determined to cut support for pensioners.
Only Labor is standing up for Australian pensioners and fighting for a fair pension.
Labor continues to call on the Abbott Government to unreservedly drop its cuts to pension indexation forever.
