Communities invited to seek funding to fight binge drinking

1 July 2008

Jenny Macklin MP, Member for Jagajaga, today invited local community groups to apply for funding to run programs to help fight binge drinking as part of the Federal Government’s National Binge Drinking Strategy.

“These grants will allow community groups and organisations to develop effective and sustainable partnerships with their police, health authorities, local government and licensees to combat binge drinking.

Organisations such as sporting clubs, youth groups, health services and other non-government organisations are encouraged to apply for grants of up to $150,000 for individual organisations or $250,000 for groups in partnership.

The emphasis will be on innovative projects aimed at preventing or reducing binge drinking.
Application kits will be available from www.alcohol.gov.au, www.health.gov.au/tenders, by emailing communitylevelinitiatives@health.gov.au, or by phoning 1800 209 312.

“The Rudd Government is determined to fight binge drinking,” Ms Macklin said.

“The Community Level Initiative will facilitate action directly into communities, by communities, for communities.”
