Celebrating 100 years of the Girl Guides

7 October 2009

Jenny Macklin MP has hailed the contribution that Girl Guides have made to our local community following the Australian Government’s announcement that 2010 will be designated ‘Year of the Girl Guide’.

The motto for the centenary year is “Let's celebrate our past, live the present and power into the future.”
“From humble beginnings 100 years ago, the Girl Guides have grown into the largest voluntary organisation for girls and young women in the world, with an estimated 10 million members worldwide,” Ms Macklin said.
“For 100 years the Guiding movement has supported girls to grow into confident and inspiring young women.”
Ms Macklin said more than one million Australian women have been or are still Girl Guides.
“Local units such as the Banksia, Eltham and Greensborough Guides provide an enormous service to the local community,” Ms Macklin said.
“Over the years, they have helped local girls and young women to develop important life skills such as team building, leadership skills and most importantly, making new friends.
Further information on planned centenary activities can be found online at www.guidesvic.org.au.

Ms Macklin said the Royal Australian Mint would also produce a circulating one dollar coin to commemorate the Guides and their centenary year.
“The coin will enter into circulation some time next year, so remember to keep an eye out for it,” she said.
