CARERS IN LIBERALS’ SIGHTS

The Department of Social Services has confirmed that a review is underway into eligibility for the Carers Payment.

Malcolm Turnbull and Christian Porter need to immediately confirm whether they are planning on cutting the Carer Payment, or pushing people off the payment entirely.

Considering the Liberal’s record on cuts to vulnerable Australians, carers will be understandably concerned about what this Government has in store for them.

In October last year, just after becoming the Minister, Christian Porter
suggested payments for Carers could potentially be cut.

Now we know that option is alive and well.

Carers haven’t forgotten that the Liberals tried to cut indexation for the Carer Payment.

Fortunately, Labor was able to prevent this measure from getting through the parliament.

But it is clear the Liberals still have Australia’s carers in their sights.

Mr Turnbull and Mr Porter should give carers the certainty they deserve and rule out cuts to the Carer Payment immediately.

Only Labor will stand up for carers, because only Labor puts people first.
