BACKBENCHERS REVOLT AGAINST ABBOTT’S PAID PARENTAL LEAVE SCHEME

Coalition backbenchers are again calling for Tony Abbott’s $5.5 billion paid parental leave scheme to be dropped.

Fairfax reports today that veteran critics of Tony Abbott’s scheme, Andrew Laming, George Christensen, Ian MacDonald and John Williams have renewed their calls on Tony Abbott to shelve the policy.

This is a complete dud of a policy. It’s unfair and it’s unaffordable.

This is Tony Abbott’s ‘signature policy’.  Despite business, ordinary families and even his own colleagues saying this policy is a disaster, the Prime Minister has ploughed ahead and recommitted to it day after day after day.  Tony Abbott has tied himself to this disastrous policy.

It’s outrageous that at a time when the government is cutting the pension, cutting young people off Newstart and slashing family payments, it is still proceeding with a scheme that would see $50,000 go to wealthy women to have a baby.

Australia already has a fair and affordable Paid Parental Leave scheme. Yesterday on ABC Radio, Liberal backbencher Andrew Laming paid tribute to Labor’s scheme:

"We already have a minimum wage paid parental leave scheme in place and that's credit to the former government.”

ANDREW LAMING, ABC RADIO BRISBANE, 8 OCTOBER 2014

This is the latest embarrassing outbreak of dissent in the Government’s ranks over Tony Abbott’s “signature” paid parental leave scheme.

Tony Abbott is all alone when it comes to his unfair and unaffordable Paid Parental Leave Scheme.

Tony Abbott should drop this dud scheme for good.
