ANDREWS WRONG ON NDIS FUNDING

June 12, 2014

Kevin Andrews has got it wrong again on the funding of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

Speaking today at the Australian Council of Social Service conference in Brisbane, Mr Andrews incorrectly claimed that the NDIS has “not yet been budgeted”.

The NDIS is fully funded into the future.

Labor made sure of it by introducing a half a percentage point increase in the Medicare levy, raising more than $20 billion between 2014-15 and 2018-19, some of this revenue will go to the states to fund their share.

Legislation for this was passed unanimously by the Parliament in May 2013. Kevin Andrews should know – he voted for it.

In last year’s budget Labor allocated $14.3 billion over seven years to rollout the NDIS across Australia.

Labor made a number of responsible decisions to ensure the financial sustainability of the NDIS, this included means testing the Private Health Insurance Rebate.

Labor understands that people with disability, their families and carers deserve funding certainty on the NDIS.

Kevin Andrews must immediately stop peddling falsehoods about the funding arrangements for the NDIS.
