ABBOTT’S WEASEL WORDS ON PENSION

April 16, 2014

Prime Minister Tony Abbott is using weasel words to try and stem the savage backlash against his secret plans to cut the Age Pension.

But the Prime Minister simply can’t be trusted to keep his word, with reports in today’s Australian indicating that changes to the Age Pension remain in ‘active’ discussion at a Cabinet level within the Government.

Tony Abbott can try all the sneaky, tricky lines he wants – but he said very clearly before the election that there would be no change to the pension.

Any change to the pension would be a complete betrayal of 2.3 million Australian pensioners.

Unless the Prime Minister and Treasurer Joe Hockey decisively rule out any change to the Age Pension, Labor – together with pensioners across Australia – will make sure the Prime Minister pays for his broken promise.

Before the election, Tony Abbott made clear that there would be:

“No cuts to education, no cuts to health, no change to pensions, no change to the GST and no cuts to the ABC or SBS.”

Budgets are about priorities. If Tony Abbott wants to cut, he should start by scrapping his unfair and unaffordable Paid Parental Leave scheme, which would give $75,000 to wealthy women to have a baby.

Australia’s pensioners shouldn’t have to pay for Tony Abbott’s twisted priorities.
