Children in preschool and kindergarten are the latest targets of Tony Abbott’s assault on education.
Reports today reveal the Government is considering walking away preschool and kindergarten funding altogether.
This would be a devastating blow to children’s development and a huge hit to the family budgets.
The Government extended Labor’s program of federal funding for preschool and kindergarten, but we now know this was just to get them past the next election, until they could wipe their hands of responsibility altogether.
At the time, Tony Abbott said:
“We have a federation reform whitepaper and that will look at the question of who is going to take primary responsibility for preschool going forward…”

With 90 per cent of brain development occurring in the first five years, this program is so important to give every child the best start in life.
If this program is cut, most children will only have access to 10 hours of preschool or kindergarten.
Since Labor introduced federal funding the proportion of children accessing 15 hours has climbed from only 23 per cent in 2009 to 82 per cent now.
Without federal funding, preschool and kindergarten services have warned that fees would rise by up to 70 per cent.
First schools, now preschools and kindergartens – when will the Government’s attack on our children’s future stop?
