ABBOTT’S MOTHER OF ALL INSULTS WILL LEAVE 80,000 MOTHERS WORSE OFF
May 11, 2015
In the mother of all insults Tony Abbott is set to cut paid parental leave to around 80,000 Australian mums.
Australian families can never believe a word Tony Abbott ever says on paid parental leave.
First he said it would be introduced over his dead body.
Then he promised an extravagant $20 billion scheme that gave wealthy women $75,000 to take six months off to have a baby.
Then in the face of Labor’s campaign, Tony Abbott decided to scrap his ‘signature policy’, despite declaring that it was his ‘fundamental conviction’.
Now Tony Abbott wants to make savage cuts to paid parental leave that will leave almost half of new mothers worse off.
And what’s worse – it may well undermine the employer’s role in providing PPL.Kate Carnell, Chief executive of the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, today indicated that employers would shift payments to other benefits. Stating:
It’s hard to see why employers would continue to pay parental leave if it meant the government stopped paying and they were simply footing the bill for the government.”
KATE CARNELL, GUARDIAN, 11 MAY 2015
This is exactly what the government said they wouldn’t do.
As recently as last year the former Social Services Minister Kevin Andrews said:
“The Government does not intend to displace existing paid parental leave schemes provided under industrial agreements… Employers will continue to be allowed to determine their own policies including offering top - ups to attract staff.”
KEVIN ANDREWS, SMH, 25 JANUARY 2014
Tony Abbott’s dishonesty and incompetence on PPL is still hurting Australians.
With this latest backflip Australian families know they can never trust Tony Abbott ever again.
