ABBOTT’S COLLEAGUES URGE HIM TO DUMP PAID PARENTAL LEAVE…AGAIN

June 09, 2014

Members of the Government are again out and about urging Tony Abbott to dump his unfair and unaffordable Paid Parental Leave Scheme.

Fairfax media reports today that long term critic of Tony Abbott’s scheme, Nationals Senator John Williams, is urging Tony Abbott to instead retain the fundamentals of Labor’s fair and affordable scheme.

This follows new Government data reported in News Ltd papers yesterday confirming that Tony Abbott’s unaffordable Paid Parental Leave Scheme is grossly unfair. It also follows an admission on ABC TV yesterday from Acting Prime Minister Warren Truss that Abbott’s scheme faces opposition from both Liberal and National Party rooms.

Government data in yesterday’s report showed that more than 12,000 women earning more than $90,000 per annum will receive $45,000-50,000 to have six months off to have a baby.

In contrast, the Government report found that Labor’s fair and affordable Paid Parental Leave Scheme is well targeted to low and middle income women.

At the same time as Tony Abbott unleashes an all out attack on low and middle income families, pensioners and young people, he wants to press ahead with his plans to pay thousands of high income women $50,000 to have six months off to have a baby.

Tony Abbott is completely friendless when it comes to his rolled-gold, inequitable Paid Parental Leave Scheme.

He should listen to his colleagues and dump it immediately.
