June 05, 2014

Assistant Minister for Social Services Mitch Fifield has confirmed that Tony Abbott’s budget will leave Australian pensioners worse off.

the new indexation arrangements mean pensioners will get less:

“Adjusting indexation does slow the rate of index.”

He also confirmed this was just what the Government had intended. In response to a question about the rationale behind the measure, he said:

“It’s been put in place in an effort to slow the rate of pension increase.”

The Department of Social Services also confirmed that pensioners will get less as a result of the budget.

In response to a direct question from Labor Senator Jan McLucas about whether pensioners would get less under the new arrangements, the Department admitted that they would:

“The rate of growth of the pension will be lower on these estimates and this costing under CPI than MTAWE.” – Serena Wilson, Department of Social Services

“The saving indicates that there is an assumption that CPI will grow less than MTAWE will over that period.” – Serena Wilson, Department of Social Services

“There’s a costing that indicates a save.” – Andrew Whitecross, Department of Social Services

Department Secretary Finn Pratt also confirmed that the Government has been fully briefed on the impact these cuts would have on pensioners:

“We would have provided advice to Government on all aspects of this measure.” – Finn Pratt, Department of Social Services

Tony Abbott’s budget is an assault on the retirement security of millions of Australia.

Tony Abbott lied to Australian pensioners, and now they are going to have to pay for his broken promises.

Labor will fight these savage pension cuts.
