ABBOTT LIES TO AUSTRALIAN CARERS

Tony Abbott has again lied to Australian carers with another misleading answer in Question Time today.

The Prime Minister wrongly stated that:

“There are no cuts to the Carers Payment… in the Budget”

TONY ABBOTT, HOUSE OF REPRESNTATIVES, 17 JULY 2014

But Tony Abbott’s Budget papers clearly show on page 203 a cut to the indexation of the Carer Payment from September 2017.

This will leave more than 200,000 people on the Carers Payment substantially worse off.

The Australian Council of Social Services (ACOSS) estimates that carers will be around $80 a week worse off within ten years because of these cuts to the indexation of the Carer Payment.

Carers are people who dedicate their lives to the care of others.

They deserve to be told the truth by Tony Abbott.

They don’t deserve to be lied to and they don’t deserve an $80 a week cut to the Carer Payment – which is precisely what Tony Abbott has planned for them.

Tony Abbott must stop lying to carers and explain why he is cutting the indexation rate of the Carer Payment.
