ABBOTT INSULTS OLDER AUSTRALIANS AGAIN

June 25, 2014

Tony Abbott has insulted older Australians again today, suggesting in Question Time that they do not make an economic contribution to the nation.

 Tony Abbott said:

"we think older people should be economic contributors, not just social and cultural contributors”

[TONY ABBOTT – QUESTION TIME – 25 JUNE 2014]

The suggestion is a complete insult.

Older Australians continue to make an economic contribution well beyond their retirement, through volunteerism and unpaid caring responsibilities, including childcare, and many continue to do some part-time or casual work.

This is in addition to the lifetime contribution they have made over their working lives.

Yesterday, he said payments for Australian seniors were a ‘cash splash’ – we all know Tony Abbott’s real cash splash is his unfair and unaffordable paid parental leave scheme.

Tony Abbott thinks older Australians are a burden on the budget.

That is why he is cutting the Age Pension, cutting concessions for pensioners for things like electricity, rates and car registration, as well as cutting the $800 Seniors Supplement.

Older Australians have worked their whole life for a secure retirement, they deserve a secure retirement.

They do not deserve to be treated in this way by Tony Abbott and his cruel government.
