ABBOTT CONFIRMS PENSION CUTS TO STAY

March 09, 2015

Tony Abbott has confirmed that his Government will proceed with savage cuts to the indexation of the pension, despite clear evidence in last week’s Intergenerational Report that the cut will push pensioners into poverty.

This afternoon, the Prime Minister said:

“There are no plans to make any changes to the age pension other than those that were announced in the Budget last year”

TONY ABBOTT – DOORSTOP – 9 MARCH 2015

These changes would see the pension indexed to CPI only from 2017, resulting is a dramatic decline in the living standards of Australia’s 3.7 million pensioners.

These changes risk creating an underclass of pensioners in Australia. They must be rejected.

Last week’s Intergenerational Report revealed just how savage these cuts to pension indexation really are. But Tony Abbott is proceeding anyway. It shows just how cruel this Prime Minister really is.

It also shows that the modelling contained in the Intergenerational Report – which shows a change in 2028/2029 to Average Weekly Earnings - is completely worthless. These projections do not reflect the Government’s policy.

Labor will fight Tony Abbott every day between now and the next election to ensure these changes never see the light of day.

Labor will never accept a change to pension indexation that would push pensioners into poverty.

Tony Abbott should drop these cuts immediately.
