$92,000 for West Heidelberg Community Legal Centre

16 June 2008

Jenny Macklin, Federal Member for Jagajaga, has welcomed the announcement of over $92,000 for the West Heidelberg Community Legal Centre based at Banyule Community Health.

The Rudd Government has announced a $10 million one-off funding boost for the Commonwealth Community Legal Services Program to help them continue to help the vulnerable in our community.

The funding is intended to assist centres in managing the increasing demand for their services.

“This funding boost shows the Rudd Government’s strong commitment to helping vulnerable people access much-needed legal assistance services”, Ms Macklin said.

“People in need in our community, such as those at risk of homelessness or experiencing family breakdown will have improved access to legal assistance.

Mick Geary, President of the West Heidelberg Community Legal Service believes the funding will be well used in addressing unmet legal need in the local community.

“Recent local research has identified that knowledge, capacity, capability and understanding are crucial to ensure better access to justice. These funds will target vulnerable groups who require the support to address these key areas,” Mr Geary said.

Community legal centres provide valuable support to vulnerable people in a range of matters, including family law, tenancy issues, employment disputes and consumer credit and debt.

Centres also have the expertise and referral networks to ensure clients are directed to other
agencies, which can assist with non-legal issues they are facing.

The Rudd Government has also allocated an additional one-off payment of $7 million for
legal aid.
